RE:    LETTERS OF INTEREST – RECRUIT TRAINING GUEST INSTRUCTOR – FIREFIGHTER FOR RECRUIT CLASS 119

Training Division is currently accepting letters of interest for the position of Recruit Training Guest Instructor – Firefighter, for Recruit Class 119. Per the Memorandum of Agreement between the Department and Local 27, the ideal candidate for Guest Instructor will hold the rank of Firefighter; however, Lieutenants may still apply and may be considered for a Guest Instructor position if the Firefighter applicant pool is insufficient.

Guest Instructors work an administrative schedule of four 10-hour days. Overtime is compensated per Union Contract.

Administrative credit will be earned per the Memorandum of Agreement between Local 27 and the Fire Department (SFD Memo No. 32-21).

Recruit Class 119 is scheduled to begin on August 2, 2023. The anticipated class size is 53 members thus requiring nine Guest Instructors, five Engine Instructors, and four Truck Instructors. Members selected for this position can expect to be temporarily assigned to the Training Division for 10 weeks starting on July 19, 2023.

Guest Instructors spend time prior to the start of Recruit School ensuring they have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to teach and demonstrate firefighting operations in their assigned discipline, including the teaching points, skill progression matrix, and remediation points. This Train-the-Trainer period will be under the direction of the Lead Instructors.

During Recruit School, the Guest Instructor will work directly under the Lead Engine or Lead Truck Instructor and be responsible to explain, demonstrate, and teach Firefighter position #3 and #4 skills, observe recruits, identify skill gaps, and remediate skill deficiencies through additional teaching, coaching, and demonstration. Guest Instructors will also provide feedback to both the Recruits and the Lead Instructors.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and selection criteria will be considered for the position of Guest Instructor for Recruit Class 119.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least three years in the Seattle Fire Department
  • Understanding of basic Engine and/or Truck company operations
  • Assigned two years consecutively to an Engine or Truck Company (Firefighters)
  • Recently, within the last 3 years, participated as an instructor in manipulative skills instruction in the Seattle Fire Department

Ideal candidates for this position will possess:

·       Fire Instructor 1 Certification – required to lead/instruct in live fire evolutions. (NFPA1403)

·       Competency in teaching theory and the delivery of practical skills demonstrations

·       Ability to teach and evaluate skill retention objectively and fairly

·       Dedication to helping members improve their firefighting knowledge and skills

·       Effective communication skills – verbal and written

·       Ability to complete work on schedule without direct supervision

Selection Criteria

Members will be selected based on the needs of the class and fair and equitable distribution of training opportunities. Factors considered during the selection process are:

  • Department hire date, assignments, and timelines
  • Fire Instructor 1 Certification
  • Instructional experience, including previous assignment(s) to Recruit Training
  • Skills and abilities

    We are trying to get a camping spot for the recruitment class of 119’s final graduation after being a probation firefighter in August 2024. But we need the actual ceremony date to reserve a campsite. Coming from California to see our Probie graduate. We are so proud of him!
